Listening

Practice your active listening skills with these three techniques.

Active listening is defined as the use of verbal and non-verbal communication techniques that are aimed to comprehend a message completely by focusing on specific details. Exhibiting active listening skill does not only help in solving problems, but it also helps build relationships. This is often used to show engagement and interest to what the speaker is saying.

In the IELTS Listening test, you can show your ability to actively listen when you paraphrase. Paraphasing is used in all the four tests in IELTS. The main challenge in the IELTS listening test is your ability to identify paraphrased words/phrases from the audio.

Another method that you can use to improve your active listening skill is a technique that I can "Judgement Blocking". As the term implies, you should be able to block whatever judgments or opinions you may have about the given topic. Many people tend to forget that we are not asked to provide an opinion or idea in the listening test. Whatever knowledge we have about a certain topic must be completely withheld.

Finally, learn to catch signal words or phrases. This is called signposting. For this technique, you need to be familiar with expressions that are generally used in certain situations. For example, when listening to directions or instructions, it is automatic to hear sequencing words or transition words like "first," "then, "next," and etc. These words give "signals" to the listener.

Practicing the use of the mentioned tips above can greatly improve your active listening skill and can hopefully help you achieve your target IELTS band score!
