The format of the IELTS Speaking test is the same for both the Academic and General tests. This test is a one-on-one interview that is conducted on a different day from the other three tests depending on the schedule provided by the test center you registered in.
The test lasts for 11 to 15 minutes and is recorded. It has 3 sections or parts, and 4 categories are checked by the evaluator. To see the complete details of the band descriptors, click on this link: IELTS Speaking band descriptor (Public version)
In the first part of the test, the test taker is asked to answer general topics about him/herself. This part usually takes 4-5 minutes to finish. Before the interview, the examiner will be checking the test taker's identity. Watch this video to understand how the speaking test begins.
Getting ready to speak.
During this part, the candidate will be asked 12 questions from three different topics (hobbies, school, hometown, etc).
Following this is what we call "Individual Longturn". In this part, the test taker will be given a task card with a specific topic. An extra piece of paper and a pencil will be given to the candidate for note-taking. The preparation time is 1 minute, but the response time is for 2 minutes.

Finally, we have the discussion part. The third part is the longest section (5- 6 minutes). The questions here are related to whatever topic is given in the second part. However, the test taker is asked to give a more in-depth discussion of abstract issues.
