Advantages outweigh disadvantages Essay

Academic IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic:
Today much of the food people eat gets transported from farms that are thousands of miles away. Some people believe it would be better for the environment and the economy if people only consumed food produced by local farmers.
Would the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Sample essay:

The demand for food is always high. Many agricultural goods are shipped to far areas to help meet this demand. Other people however suggest that buying produce from local manufacturers is preferable both environmentally and economically. Does this have more merits than demerits? This essay will introduce how the benefits and drawback are of equal weight.

Patronizing agricultural products from local farmers provide a stable job and source of income to the workers. Also, consumers can safely guarantee the freshness and quality of the crops they eat. Another good point to consider is the price. That is, food from local farmers can be more affordable than those imported from far places. Farmers do not need to think about paying for things like oil, toll, and tax since they do not have to ship their products.

On the other hand, buying only from the locals can have negative effects. One is the problem of possible food oversupply. It is not guaranteed that all their produce can be sold if they only sell in one small area. In addition, because of cheaper food price, farmers may not receive high returns from their products. This can greatly affect their production and day to day living. Lastly, consumers can only have a limited number of product choices if we opt to only consume local products.
