Task Achievement explained + Model answer


This blog will explain how to achieve a good score in one of the band descriptors in the first IELTS Academic Writing task. According to the public band descriptor, a high score is given if:

  • the output fully satisfies all the requirements of the task; clearly presents a fully developed response (Band 9)
  •  covers all requirements of the task sufficiently; presents, highlights and illustrates key features/bullet points clearly and appropriately (Band 8)
  •  covers the requirements of the task; presents a clear overview of main trends, differences or stages; clearly presents and highlights key features/bullet points but could be more fully extended (Band 7)

How to get your desired band score? Follow the instructions in the task carefully. 

Here's a step-by-step guide.

1. You must paraphrase the given topic sentence. Don't forget that using the same words from the task topic is not allowed.
2. SUMMARISE the information by selecting and reporting the main features.
3. Make comparisons where relevant.
4. Write at least 150 words in 20 minutes.

Task topic: The table shows the percentage of journeys made by different forms of transport in four countries. The bar chart shows the results of a survey into car use.

Sample:

(1 PARAPHRASE) The table represents the total ratio of trips made by different transportation in four countries. The other data illustrates the reasons for car use in the USA in percentage. (2 SUMMARISE) Overall, journeys made by car in the mentioned nations were strikingly high compared to the other forms of transport and lack of alternative was the most cited reason for its use in America.

(3 Make COMPARISONS) Focusing on the table, it can be seen that almost half of the trips made in each country were done using a car. In the USA alone, commuting via a car garnered a 90% result. Public transport came in second in both the UK and France with 11 and 18 percent. Walking was another popular method in all countries while other had a mere 1 to 3 percent making it the least choice of transportation. It is important to note though that in the Netherlands, bicycles were chosen by 26% of its citizens which was more than four times higher than the approval rate it received in the three other countries. 


(4 Write at least 150 WORDS) As for the other graph, less than 40% of Americans agreed that there is no other alternative for cars when travelling to work. Moreover, 30% of the respondents said that their work demands them the need for cars. This was then followed immediately by the reason of convenience with just a rough difference of 8%. Lastly, most Americans said that cars are quicker and essential for night shift workers.

Sample report:   The line graph depicts the yearly proportion of visitors to a certain island in The Caribbean from 2010 to 2017. In general, the number of guests multiplied in seven years.   In 2010, there were a million travelers who went to the island. This total rose consistently over the years until 2015 and 2016 where it stayed at less than 3 million. However, in the last year, 2017, the number shot up to 3.5 million people.   From the graph, there were more vacationers staying on the island during most of the years. In the first two years, there were fewer than a million guests on the island before slowly increasing to one and a half million in 2013. The pie chart illustrates the percentage of what Anthropology graduates from one university did after their graduation. The table reveals the earned income they make after 5 years’ work according to three kinds of employment. Overall, in the first graph, most of the graduates worked fulltime after finishing university while the table shows that those who rendered work for 5 years earn a different range in payment in various work sectors.   According to the pie chart, among the six destinations provided, a little over half of the alumni went straight on to working fulltime. Part-time workers garnered the second place with 15%. Surprisingly, the rate of unemployed graduates came in third with 12%.
