This blog will explain how to achieve a good score in one of the band descriptors in the first IELTS Academic Writing task. According to the public band descriptor, a high score is given if:
- the output fully satisfies all the requirements of the task; clearly presents a fully developed response (Band 9)
- covers all requirements of the task sufficiently; presents, highlights and illustrates key features/bullet points clearly and appropriately (Band 8)
- covers the requirements of the task; presents a clear overview of main trends, differences or stages; clearly presents and highlights key features/bullet points but could be more fully extended (Band 7)
How to get your desired band score? Follow the instructions in the task carefully.
Here's a step-by-step guide.
1. You must paraphrase the given topic sentence. Don't forget that using the same words from the task topic is not allowed.
2. SUMMARISE the information by selecting and reporting the main features.
3. Make comparisons where relevant.
4. Write at least 150 words in 20 minutes.
Refer to the sample photo above.
Task topic: The table shows the percentage of journeys made by different forms of transport in four countries. The bar chart shows the results of a survey into car use.
Sample:
(1 PARAPHRASE) The table represents the total ratio of trips made by different transportation in four countries. The other data illustrates the reasons for car use in the USA in percentage. (2 SUMMARISE) Overall, journeys made by car in the mentioned nations were strikingly high compared to the other forms of transport and lack of alternative was the most cited reason for its use in America.

(3 Make COMPARISONS) Focusing on the table, it can be
seen that almost half of the trips made in each country were done using a car.
In the USA alone, commuting via a car garnered a 90% result. Public transport
came in second in both the UK and France with 11 and 18 percent. Walking was another
popular method in all countries while other had a mere 1 to 3 percent making it
the least choice of transportation. It is important to note though that in the
Netherlands, bicycles were chosen by 26% of its citizens which was more than
four times higher than the approval rate it received in the three other
countries.
(4 Write at least 150 WORDS) As for the other graph, less than
40% of Americans agreed that there is no other alternative for cars when
travelling to work. Moreover, 30% of the respondents said that their work
demands them the need for cars. This was then followed immediately by the
reason of convenience with just a rough difference of 8%. Lastly, most
Americans said that cars are quicker and essential for night shift workers.
Approximate word count: 240
