Cambridge 13 (Academic IELTS) Writing test 2: Task 2

Sample essay:

The promise of living better lives by providing myriads of choices that are tailored according to our preferences has been a trend recently. Convenience is the goal of every breakthrough and new invention. This essay will point out why choices people have nowadays are plentiful.

At present, when we think about having a lot of options, the best example to mention is material things. More and more gadgets, or things related to technology, are becoming accessible and somehow affordable. Almost all people own a piece of technology, like smartphones, regardless of their age, gender, and status. Now and then, well-known brands release a new smartphone model. Consumers are hooked on buying the newest phone that sometimes they cannot decide which one to purchase.

When it comes to intangible things though, possibilities also seem endless. For instance, education. Alternatives such as distance learning and vocational training are becoming popular. Full-time workers who are interested in acquiring continuous education credits can study in the comforts of their own home during their free time. Also, like in the Philippines, citizens who cannot afford to study in traditional school settings can still have the chance to learn skills through free training provided by government institutions.

To conclude, opportunities are everywhere especially to those who are vigilant enough to look. It is essential to remember that many doors are open if one is brave enough to explore. Having too many choices though may lead to stagnation. In the end, everything would all boil down to a person’s ability to think critically and to make decisions easily.

In 1967, there was approximately 11 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide released by an average Englishman which was about ten times higher than the emissions made by an individual from Portugal. On the other hand, a different trend can be noted in the countries Italy and Portugal where the emissions slowly rose from an initial rate of approximately 4 and 1 metric ton to about 7 and 6 metric tonnes in 4 decades. In Sweden, emissions increased to its record highest in 1977 w...
