It has been a long time since I posted here. I was busy doing other stuff that I did not have enough time to do some practices. However, now I can concentrate on practicing again. Anyway, here's the third installation of the 13th Cambridge IELTS textbook. Maybe some of you already have a copy of this since I have been seeing a lot of pdf copies of this new book on the internet lately. But for those of you who do not have access to this pdf, here it is. You can check my other posts for some of the other test questions from this book, too. Many English learners are well-versed when it comes to expressing their opinions verbally. Others are more into writing. For those who are more confident with their speaking skills, their one true challenge can probably be writing. I have met many learners who are impeccably great when it comes talking but lack the skills when it comes to writing. One of their dilemmas would be their use of "punctuation." Learning the "rules" of punctuation can be highly daunting and demotivating; however, it should not be that hard. Enriching your academic vocabulary is essential in the IELTS test. Vocabulary is one of the cores of IELTS. It is important in all four macro skills and without a wide knowledge of it, getting the band score that you want or need may seem to be a very far-fetched idea (maybe next to impossible!) As a result, various vocabulary books are published. These books claim to list almost all words that are used in the IELTS test. It may be so, but what is the best way to study and learn vocabulary? Is it memorization? Should you memorize each and every word you read in your book of choice? Should you make your own list of synonyms? Use them in your sentences? Well, of course, all of these ways are helpful and probably effective. However, I am a firm believer in the idea that vocabulary is best learned incidentally. No memorization required. What is an idiomatic expression? Well, these are words/phrases that we use that mean differently from what they seem.  Still confused? Allow me to use an example. Imagine that you just finished a test and a friend then asks you how the exam went. Of course, your response would depend on how easy you thought the test was. If you think the test was "easy", you can say, "It was a piece of cake!"  "a piece of cake" is an example of an idiomatic expression. This means that something was too easy for you. However, some people might take the phrase literally: they might imagine a slice of cake. In the IELTS Speaking test, it is highly recommended that you use these kinds of expressions in your responses. When you look at the public band descriptor for speaking, the use of idioms and less common idiom falls to band score 7 (Lexical resource). The use of idioms is quite difficult though. Spelling can be a skill that most people overlook. However, English language learners must realize the significance of this skill, especially when taking academic tests like the IELTS. In the listening, reading and of course, writing tests, spelling each word correctly promotes the impression of the mastery of the English language. Here are some of the "guidelines" learners should remember when it comes to spelling. Take note, I used the word guideline since the English language has a lot of exceptions. so technically speaking, the word "rules" cannot be used because a rule must not be bent. Another common question type in both IELTS Speaking and Writing is the "Agree/Disagree" question. This type of question is about giving your opinion or evaluation on someone else's opinion.  Here are some expressions you can use when evaluating: Agreeing I agree with the idea that... I'm in favour of... I support the fact that... I completely agree with... I couldn't agree more (DO NOT USE CONTRACTIONS IN ACADEMIC WRITING) That is so true / That's for sure (Speaking) No doubt about it (Speaking) Disagreeing I disagree with the idea that... The most common question type in the IELTS Speaking test is the Opinion question. Here are some examples of expressions to use when giving your opinions: Neutral opinions: If you ask me,  As I see it, I'd say, In my view, Strong opinions: I'm sure I'm convinced I'm certain Weak opinions: I guess I suppose I imagine I reckon' It might/may/could Idiomatic phrases: Off the top of my head, I'd say...
