Cambridge 12: Academic IELTS Test 6 Writing Task 1 Sample (2 Maps: Islip town centre now and in the future)

Sample essay:

The maps compare the physical features of Islip town center at present and its proposed refurbishment in the future.

It can be highlighted from the visuals that there will be a lot of significant changes made in this area and that only a few establishments will remain. Looking at both maps, it can be seen that there will be commercial, residential and roadway improvements.

At present, there are a few shops in between the main road and also some housing below the shops and near the school. In the proposal, the center will have a dual carriageway that will surround all the commercial buildings to be constructed in the center, making them more accessible. The main road will become a pedestrian road that will be next to a bus station, a shopping center, a carpark, and new housing. These buildings will be replacing the shops located on the northern side of the center. The shops below the main road will be unchanged.

The school will remain in its original place on the southwestern side of Islip which will have some minor changes in the future. The park, which is located on the eastern side of the center will become smaller in size to make room for the dual carriageway that will be below it and the new residences that will be built beside it.

  1. The map describes the main feature changes between the prospective expansion of the Islip town centre and the current town centre.

The most prominent modification for the new town centre comes in the form of a dual-carriageway surrounding the town centre. Similar additions to the proposed development are a bus station, shopping centre and a car park all adjacent to each other facing the north-south direction. Moreover, the pathway in front of the latest developments is pedestrians only zone.

The array of shops lining the west-east direction is the only thing that is unchanged, although the opposite cluster of shops did not have a similar fate. The housing area is still intact moreover, new housing has been approved near the park in the south-east direction and another one in the north-east direction just close to the new buildings.

    1. You have great vocabs here though I'm unsure if they were used in proper context. I can say though that I can totally visualize the map just by reading the essay so I think it's around 7-ish. Sorry, I can't give you an exact rate since I have no authority to do that.

  2. The given maps illustrate the present condition and the proposed plans for the development of the Islip town center. It is clear from the diagram that Islip will change considerably with the introduction of several new developments in the second figure.
The original town has a main road in the middle and shops are alongside the road. Residential houses are present to the south of the main road while the countryside is opposite. Additionally, the park and school are in the eastern and western directions, respectively.
In the proposed plans, one of the most striking changes will be constructing a dual carriageway, which will be used as the main road, and the main road will be turned into a pedestrians' path. The countryside, thereafter, will be demolished where bus station, shopping center, car park area will be built to the north side of the footpath. Furthermore, new housing will construct both sides of the pedestrian, and the northeast corner housing will be connected with the dual carriageway. At last, the residential area of the southern part of shops will be refurbished and transferred to different locations.
