Cambridge 15: Academic IELTS Writing test 1: Task 2 (Two-part question: Owning a house)

Many people from different countries have different views on possessing their own homes. Some prefer to invest in their own house more than renting one. This essay explains the possible reasons for this choice and the implications of this.

A house is an investment. In the Philippines, many people dream of possessing a house of their own. This is because it is emphasized in the community that it is a symbol of success. Buying a property is expensive and requires dedication and hard work. People believe that being able to have a place where one can retire and keep their families safe and secure is the ultimate goal. In addition, having a place where you can exercise freedom, physically and financially, is an attractive idea for a lot of people. When renting, there is a threat of being kicked out if a person fails to pay their monthly dues. When this happens, families are forced to temporarily or permanently stay in desolate places or roadsides, therefore, making dreaming of having your own house stronger.

Although, there are many points to be considered before buying a house. Other than the ideas mentioned above, several pros can still be provided. Nowadays, some houses are not only living spaces but also doubles as a commercial area. There are families who run their own small business in extra rooms in their houses. Also, more and more people are preferring to work from home, and having the liberty to upscale or renovate a room as a small office is a convenience only homeowners have. However, as stated earlier, it is not a goal that can be afforded easily by everyone. Recently, real estate companies provide striking promos and discounts to aspiring homeowners. The rent-to-own scheme has enticed many people to sign-up for long-term contracts. As a result, these people need to pay rent fees every month for at least ten years which is the opposite of their aim of being financially-free of debts.

To conclude, I firmly think that a house is a necessity. The option of buying one or renting depends entirely on what the person’s purposes are and his or her financial capability. Both demand money and both provides comfort and security.
