Working from home has been around for quite some time now;
however, the global crisis has made this work set-up more popular. Many
employees are forced to do their work at home to avoid the spread of the
coronavirus while keeping the company going. With this, managers need to find a
way to monitor their workers’ productivity through surveillance software.
Unfortunately, this solution posed more issues related to privacy. This essay
will focus on the writer’s view on the use of monitoring software.
For companies, the idea of checking their workers is merely
a way for them to guarantee that they efficiently use their time. These
computer programs track everything that employees do on their personal
computers from typing documents, sending private and business messages, recording
teleconferences, and even viewing the individual’s social network. It gathers
too much personal data that it becomes too intrusive even for the supervisors
to watch the videos the software gathers. Unfortunately, no laws can protect employees
from this indiscriminate act of data gathering. This means employers have the
full right to track and monitor their workers as much as they please.
In my personal opinion, although the main purpose of why
companies do this is highly understandable, there are many kinds of information
that must not be shared without the full consent of the person involved.
Knowing too much can result in discrimination – a problem that many people had
to go through on a daily basis. Also, I am a firm believer of the work-life
balance. For many, the home is the only place where we can be real and
comfortable. Since these times have made working from home an inevitable choice,
there must be certain rules and barriers set between the employer and employee
as to what data can and cannot be collected.
To conclude, everyone has the right to privacy. The use of
surveillance and trackers to check a person’s work efficiency is needed but it
should not be done to the point of discomfort. In the end, I do not think
workers will ignore their tasks and responsibilities during these times and managers
should probably show more trust in their employees.
