1.     Can the fashion industry ever be sustainable?

2.     And what can you do (to make it more sustainable)?

 

The ever-growing popularity of Social networking sites has made the fashion industry thrive. Many people post photos of themselves wearing the most popular trends in fashion. However, these clothes often end up in landfills making it the biggest contributor of trash in many fashion-centered countries. This essay will explain why fashion cannot be sustainable and ways on how to make it more eco-friendly.

Many new products nowadays aim for sustainability. Unfortunately, though the world of fashion can never be considered durable. People who live in countries with four seasons need to change their collection of clothes every season. This is where the term ‘fast fashion’ was coined. Clothes that do not fit the season usually are stored in closets or even thrown away. Also, there is a question of preference. Naturally, one fashion style cannot catch the interest of everyone. When clothing companies mass-produce a certain design, it is quite hard to tell if the design will be accepted by many. Some clothes might sell well while others will not. As a result, these clothes will either be recycled, trashed, or in some cases, donated.

As the call for making the fashion business more environmentally friendly is getting more attention, a number of people have been making progress in recycling and ‘upcycling’ clothes. Innovations in the production of some types of wearables have become a hype in some companies, too. There has been news of well-known shoe companies that use waste materials as raw materials for their products. As for each person, the solution is the only discipline. People must only buy clothes that are practical and necessary for daily use. Moreover, it is better if everyone supports fashion icons that promote sustainable living.

Overall, clothes are categorized as a physiological need. It is certainly impossible to completely eliminate the waste produced from it but it can be greatly reduced if we all take part in solving this dilemma.
